The girls’ golf team hosted Silver Lake on Thursday afternoon at the Duxbury Yacht Club course and qualified for the June 2 State Championships in Sterling by beating the Lakers, 5-1. Sophomore Briana Connolly was back in form with a 4 and 3 win at #1, while Colleen O’Connor was equally effective with a 5 and 4 win at #2. Kara Falcone (#3/3 and 2), Maria Varonko (#4/2-up), and Kendall Johnson (#6/4 and 3) closed out the Duxbury scoring. The previous day, the Lady Dragons traveled to Barnstable and got their revenge with a 4-2 win over the Red Raiders, who had beaten an undermanned Duxbury squad in the season opener by a similar score. Connolly had her hands full at #1, where Barnstable’s Christine Brewer had a medallist round of 44 to win one-up, while Falcone had a tough time herself with Lilly Love, who won 2-up. Duxbury’s depth eventually showed, as Emma Kellar beat Meredith Cody, 4-2, O’Connor won her match over Alex Williams, one-up, Varonko edged Alyssa Francis, 2-up, and Lorin Gerraughty narrowly got by Emily Manning, one-up. The 5-1 Lady Dragons will host back-to-back matches starting with Nauset on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30, followed by Falmouth on Thursday. |
