| Duxbury has no answer for Westwood lacrosse |

They were looking forward to this game all year long, and viewed it as their best chance yet to knock off perennial powerhouse Westwood High School. Their 11-0 record said they were ready, and their 18 goals per game no doubt had the Wolverines wondering. Nevertheless, nothing good happens for the Lady Dragons when these two teams meet, and it was exactly that way on Friday afternoon in Westwood when hosts ran circles around Duxbury in a 15-2 clobbering. Division I Westwood came into the game at 13-1, their lone loss coming at the hands of western Mass. power Longmeadow. If they were worried in any way by the Lady Dragons’ record, a closer look would have shown that only two of those wins came against quality teams. Once the game started, Duxbury raced down the field and controlled play, offering a glimmer of hope that history was in the making. Working their offense around the perimeter, they managed several shots on goalkeeper Abbie Brown, who would prove to be too imposing a presence in the Wolverine net. Whether or not their missed opportunities deflated Coach Sue Paull’s squad is up for debate, but once Westwood got their chances they rarely failed to convert. With Sarah Biron picking up groundballs and dashing down the field like Bobby Orr, Westwood went into their offense quickly, with junior captain Kelly Rich beating Stephanie Hoomis at the 21:21 mark for the first lead of the game. Less than a minute later Duxbury’s Katie Griffin was robbed by Brown, putting one more crimp in the Lady Dragons’ upset plans. Westwood would increase its lead to 2-0 with 17:55 to go before intermission, but Griffin cut the deficit in half when she took the ball at midfield and raced down the middle of the field to beat Brown. The hosts could sense they were in for a game and began to run their offense to perfection, spotting cutters in front of the net and delivering pinpoint passes that were redirected past Hoomis at will. The lead increased with every Westwood possession, and by the end of the first half the Wolverines were in a commanding position with a 7-1 lead. “We just started turning over the ball and couldn’t come up with any groundballs,†said Paull. It’s hard to imagine the Lady Dragons could be so flat in the first half of such a big game. Judging by their second half effort they must have been comatose. Failing to win a draw-control in the second half, Duxbury barely touched the ball in 30 minutes of action. “It’s almost like we gave up,†said Paull. “They have a strong defense and every time we tried to send a cutter through they would double team us. It made it very difficult for our big scorers to execute.†It was like a broken record, as each Westwood possession turned into a goal every two minutes or less, with the lead growing to 12-1 with 19:30 to go in the game and the clock on running time. Senior captain Meg Muncey had seen enough at this point, grabbing the ball and forcing herself through the Westwood defense to beat Brown and end the Wolverine scoring streak with 16:55 left on the clock. Her effort did little to motivate her teammates, as Westwood continued to unload on Hoomis every two minutes until the horn sounded. Less than 24 hours later, the Lady Dragons recovered in time to manhandle Barrington, RI, 20-7. Sophomore Siobhan McCarthy led the way with six goals for Duxbury, while Muncey and Caitlin Burke added four each to up the team’s record to 12-1. |
