The Dragons opened the week with an unfortunate loss to Whitman-Hanson (3-2), and then came back with wins over Hanover (5-0) and Middleboro (4-1) to raise their record to 5-2. Freshman Peter Muncey got the call at #1 singles, but Panther senior Vinnie McDougall got the better of the rookie with a 7-5/6-4 win. The lone bright spot for Duxbury came at #2 singles where Kevin Dame’s steady game was too much for Colin McSweeney, who was a 6-2/6-4 victim of the Dragon senior. Freshman Eric Schneider had a tough time at #3 singles in his straight set loss to Barry Pereault, while the first doubles team of Mike Latorre and Pat Murphy played well in their 7-6 (4)/ 7-5 win over Ben Hart and Matt Cutter. Playing well in a tough two-set defeat was the #2 doubles team of Andrew Pierce and Dale Day. Things went much smoother on Wednesday in the shutout of Hanover. Straight set wins by Brayden Minahan (6-1/6-1), Muncey (6-2/6-4), and the reliable TJ Cameron made the Dragons forget about Whitman-Hanson, while the #1 doubles tandem of Connor Dunphy and TJ Scholberg easily handled their match (6-0/6-1). The victory at #2 doubles saw the debut of Connor O’Keefe, who played with Stephen Day. Both players were off the court quickly in a 6-1/6-2 win. It was a long afternoon in the 4-1 win over Middleboro, and it wasn’t because of the tough competition. After over-matched wins by Minahan (6-0/6-1), Muncey (6-0/6-1), and O’Keefe (6-0/6-0) in singles, Coach John Bunar put a potential new doubles combo on the court in sophomore Ben Startzell and Alex Holopainen, who combined for an easy 6-0/6-1 win at #1 doubles. Tough luck losers for the Dragons were Pete Tenaglia and sophomore Pat Mahoney, who entertained their teammates for the rest of the afternoon in their three-set loss to Joe Berger and Ross Campbell, 2-6/6-1/2-6. “We are rounding into good form,†said Bunar. “With Startzell joining the lineup, we are quickly realizing our potential power in doubles. I see us becoming more dangerous by the day.†The Dragons will return to action on Monday when they travel to Randolph. |
