Coach Chris Sweet called it a good learning experience. Nevertheless, scoreboard watchers must be wondering is there really a dent in the Dragons’ armor.
Taking on one of the premier lacrosse prep schools in the country on Saturday afternoon, the Dragons saw their six-game winning streak come to a halt when they suffered a 13-1 loss at the hands of Georgetown Prep in Haverford, PA. Having been invited to the prestigious eight-team tournament was an acknowledgement in itself of the great work Sweet and Assistant Coach Tony Fisher have done in bringing the Duxbury program to national prominence. Four public schools were invited to play four prep schools, and none of the four won a game. “This team was the real deal,†said Sweet. “They’ll be sending 12 kids off to play Division I next year and they were absolutely loaded.†Kane Haffey scored the lone Duxbury goal, as the Dragons trailed 7-1 at halftime. Having experienced what most Massachusetts high schools do when they play the Dragons probably didn’t sit well with all the players, but it was a welcome break and trip following last Monday’s 14-7 win over Scituate. As some teams have shown, getting close to the Dragons is possible, but beating them is highly unlikely. Scoring the first goal of the game and the last three of the first half put the Sailors in a very admirable position, having beat Mickey Zaverucha for seven first-half goals. But 24 minutes is only half a game, and in the second half the Dragons turned it on and made Scituate just another Duxbury victim. Starting the second half with a 10-7 lead, Duxbury rarely allowed the Sailors to get any quality possessions in the second half, as their defense dug in and made life much easier for Zaverucha. Second-half goals by Haffey (2), senior Jake Harvey, and freshman Seamus Connelly left Scituate’s upset express at the station, as they Sailors went down for the third time this season. Senior Quinn Cully and Haffey had big games with four goals each, while Hetherington (2), Hakeem Lecky, and Brian Barry also got on the board for Duxbury. After taking on BC High on Monday, the Dragons hit the road for their annual New York swing over school vacation where they will play Christian Brothers Academy on Friday and Niskayuna on Saturday. |
