The Duxbury girls’ tennis team is off to a spectacular start under new Coach Jutta Rossano. Entering the week with a 3-1 record, the Lady Dragons doubled their win count with victories over Whitman-Hanson (5-0), Hanover (4-1), and Middleboro (4-1) to move to 6-1. Duxbury has been dominant in doubles play, with senior captain Jane Morgan and junior Cory Tucker having an easy time so far this year. But Rossano has also been blessed with the play of Erin Nelson, who has stepped in for Morgan on a couple of occasions and played like a true veteran. “This is the second time I have had to use Nelson as my varsity sub. First I used her at second doubles and against Hanover she played first doubles,†said Rosanno. “She has become a valuable sub for the team and has now helped us to two victories.†Rossano had her regular lineup in place to start the week against W-H, as Michaela Dowd fought off the Panther’s Krist Mielbye in a first set tiebreaker 6-6 (7-2) and then easily took the second set, 6-1. Senior Liza Thomas had an easy time at #2 singles with Molly Kelly, winning 6-2/6-1, while Annie Gluskin had a marathon match with Alison Lonergan, losing the first set, 2-6, but coming back and taking the next two, 6-1/6-2. Doubles went easily for the Lady Dragons, as Morgan and Tucker cruised to a 6-2/6-2 win over Lindsay Clay and Rachel Pellegrine, while the #2 doubles tandem of Julia Allen and Charlotte Weil barely broke a sweat in a 6-0/6-0 blanking of Loreto Coralles Sanches and Alexa Schofield. It was a very quick afternoon last Wednesday in Hanover with all three matches lasting two sets. Dowd had a tough afternoon, losing to Nicki White, 3-6/5-7, while Thomas had little trouble with Caroline Coogan, 6-3/6-0. Gluskin had an easy time at #3 singles too with a 6-0/6-2 victory over Holly Ordway. Nelson and Tucker hardly missed a beat in their 6-2/6-1 win over Katie Egan and Christine Coogan at #1 doubles, while the #2 doubles tandem of Allen and Weil knocked off Jade Marszalek and Kassanora Moscovics, 6-3/6-2. The week concluded with a 4-1 win in Middleboro on Thursday. Sophomore Casey Reinhart overcame some early jitters at #3 singles that found her training 4-1, but she got back on track and came through with a 6-4/6-2 win over Kacy Bozoian, while Dowd took care of business at #1 singles with a 6-3/6-3 win over Lauren Endicott. Gluskin suffered the only Duxbury defeat of the afternoon with a 6-2/6-1 loss to Hannah Bialic at #2 singles, with Nelson and Tucker winning 6-0/6-4 over McKayla and Mallory Craig, 6-0/6-4 at #1 doubles, and Allen and Weil shutting out Tracey Morrison and Corinne Monty, 6-0/6-0 at #2 doubles. After the break the girls will be back home for a pair of winnable matches with Randolph and Rockland. |
