First-year tennis Coach Jutta Rossano saw the extremes of her sport this week, as her Lady Dragons won a pair of 5-0 decisions over Quincy and Silver Lake, sandwiched around a 5-0 loss to a far more competitive Scituate squad.
Michaela Dowd got the week off to a good start when she bested Quincy’s Trang Vo, 6-3/6-0, setting the stage for a similar win by #2 single player Liza Thomas, 6-0/6-3, over Dora Pepo. Erin Nelson was close to perfection, as she blanked Salma Gummhi, 6-0/6-0, in her varsity debut filling in at #3 singles. Duxbury’s first doubles team of senior captain Jane Morgan and junior Cory Tucker barely missed a shutout in 6-1/6-0 win over Jonee Manipan and Sandy Xiem, while the #2 doubles tandem of Julia Allen and Charlotte Weil won by an identical 6-1/6-0 score over Lyna Pham and Shu Wong. It was a totally different story on Wednesday when Scituate came to town. Always a power in the Patriot League, the Sailors showed the Lady Dragons just how diverse the talent level is in league play by whipping Duxbury, 5-0. Dowd took on Kate O’Connor at #1 singles and looked like she was on her way to victory after gutting out a 7-5 first-set win, only to see her Scituate opponent come back to win straight sets, 6-3/6-0. Thomas had a tough time at #2 in a 6-0/6-2 loss to Caroline Martin, while Annie Gluskin at #3 had a marathon match with Destanee Ringler before losing 4-6/6-6 (TB 7-3 )/1-6. Morgan and Tucker almost went three sets before losing a second-set tie-breaker 0-6/6-6 (TB 2-7) at #1 doubles to Brittney Cangemi and Shelagh Joyce, while Duxbury’s #2 doubles pairing of Allen and Weil fell 2-6/4-6 to Christina McCourt and Heidi Leet. It was far more amiable on Thursday when the Lady Dragons traveled to Silver Lake and made quick work of the Lakers in a 5-0 victory. Dowd was back on track with a 6-0/6-2 win over Taylor Grifa, while Thomas had a more difficult time before coming away with a 6-3/7-5 triumph over Julie Felts. Gluskin dispatched Julie deGeradon at #3 singles with a 6-1/ 6-2 win. Morgan and Tucker had to go into overtime at #1 doubles before beating Jenna Pitts and Sorah Williams 6-1/6-6 (TB 8-6), with Allen and Weil taking on Emily Schiarizzi and Hayley Perron at #2 doubles and winning, 6-2/6-3. The girls will hit the road for two games when they travel to Hanover on Wednesday, followed by a trip to Middleboro on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. match. |
