| Lady Dragons make a lacrosse statement |

Now that the practice games are over, the Duxbury girls’ lacrosse team had a chance to prove how good it really is by taking on nemesis, Hingham High School, last Thursday afternoon in Hingham. Apparently those wins over Hanover (20-3) and Quincy (21-0) weren’t merely exploitations of start-up programs, but prime examples of just how powerful Coach Sue Paull’s team can be. After knocking off the Harborwomen, 14-12, it looks like the Lady Dragons are on course for another serious run in an attempt to duplicate the program’s first state championship in 2007. Paull is certainly getting scoring from a host of players, and it was senior Alexis Matthews who provided the game-winner on Thursday when she scored with 4:30 left in the game to give Duxbury a 13-12 lead. It’s been a piece of cake for the girls so far, but this game certainly brought some angst with it, as Hingham stayed right with Duxbury the whole way with the Lady Dragons clinging to a 7-6 halftime lead. The second half continued its back-and-forth action, as both teams matched the opposition’s effort. Skill wasn’t always the reason play was so furious, as turnovers contributed to the helter-skelter play. “We had a lot of turnovers and I was concerned late in the game, but the kids really came through in the last few minutes,†said Paull. Senior captain Meg Muncey continues to put up big numbers, as she netted five goals, while junior Katie Griffin scored a hat-trick. Sophomore Siobhan McCarthy did a nice job setting up her teammates and ended the day with a pair of goals and four assists. Junior Caitlin Burke (2) and senior Mimi Smith also scored for Duxbury. Senior Stephanie Hoomis had an outstanding afternoon in net, as she came up with nine saves to help her team move to 3-0. After hosting Scituate on Monday, the Lady Dragons will travel to Cohasset for a 4 p.m. game on Thursday. |
