| Baseball packs a wallop in shutout wins |

Apparently Coach Barney Earle knew just what he had when he picked his 2009 roster late in March. “Experience, pitching depth, and the ability to score some runs should make us a pretty formidable team,†said Earle. “I guess you could say we are a very balanced team.†That evaluation seems to have been right on the nose, as the Dragons blasted Scituate (16-0) and Silver Lake (9-0) last week in their first Patriot League action of the season. Junior Jeff Blout was outstanding on the mound last Wednesday afternoon, as he struck out 11 Scituate batters and had a no-hitter going with one out in the seventh inning. He finished with a one-hitter and only walked two. Blout got plenty of offensive support, as Colin Woods, Tyler Genereux, and Phil Sciretta all hammered home runs, and junior Pat McWilliams contributed two hits in the onslaught. The bashing continued on Thursday, as the Dragons erupted for four first-inning runs in their shutout of Silver Lake. A Sean Cross single, a Genereux walk, and a double steal set the table for Sciretta, who nailed a two-run double to get the ball rolling. Duxbury added single runs in the second, third (Matt Savard RBI double), and fourth (Woods sacrifice) to grab a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth Sciretta helped his own cause again by driving home a run with an RBI single to make it 9-0. The sophomore lefty finished the afternoon by getting three hits (two doubles) in four at-bats, while driving in three runs. On the mound Sciretta hurled a shutout and fanned five. |
