The Duxbury boys’ swim team shut down two local rivals last week to keep their record perfect at 4-0. South American speedster Bernardo Neves was the star of the day in the 89-68 victory over Norwell last Thursday at the Percy Walker Pool.  Neves continues to set new standards for speed, as he zoomed to first in the 50-yard freestyle, topping Drew Husted (3rd) and Ben White (4th). In the 100-yard freestyle, the junior dusted his previous best finishing in 51.25, only a few seconds shy of the DHS school record. Barry Su was third and Ben Potash was fourth. Hunter Chaisson also won a pair of individual events, as the senior co-captain went out to an early lead in the 200-yard individual medley and never looked back, topping newcomer Lucas Wojciekowski (3rd) and Ben Zelvis (4th) in a 2:06.53. In the 100-yard backstroke, Chaisson was challenged by Cam Crowell in the first 50 yards, but motored ahead to win (57.84), while Jason Lijewski swam a personal best in the event (1:11.31). Senior co-captain Andrew Sommer took on the Su brothers in the 100-yard breaststroke. All three swimmers raced even for three laps until the very end when Art Su dove for the wall, winning (1:09.28) over brother Barry (1:10.15) and Sommer (1:11.09). In other action, Wojciekowski was the top Duxbury finisher in the 100-yard butterfly (2nd), as he touched out John Ng by 2/100, with Sommer taking fourth. Crowell placed second in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing ahead of Ben White and Ng, while Barry Su finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, nipping out Husted and White. Art Su, Ng, Barry Su and Husted combined to win the 200-yard freestyle relay by a pool length in a season low 1:42.10. The medley relay team of Chaisson, Crowell, Ng and Neves gave it their all, but settled for second in the event. By the last event Duxbury had a 29-point lead, but it didn’t diminish the excitement of the 400-yard freestyle relay. Chaisson led off swimming stroke for stroke with Norwell for 100 yards before handing off a slight lead to Crowell, who kept the race even. Art Su went third and dove in the water facing off against Norwell’s speedster. Su finished off his 100 two-body lengths behind. It was now up to Neves, who was determined to close the gap. The Brazilian blazed through the first three laps closing fast on Norwell. Even with a yeoman effort and a blistering 50.25 time, Duxbury had to settle for second, as the team slashed five seconds off its best time, posting a 3:33.37. Earlier in the week the Dragons made routine work of Middleboro, winning 9 of 12 events in an 85-74 win, as Crowell led the team with a pair of wins. The junior cruised to first in the 200-yard freestyle, muscling out Husted and Wojciekowski. He also motored to a second win in the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.12). Ng was second and Brendan Davidson was third. Neves turned up the heat in both freestyle events, zipping to a win in the 50-yard freestyle (23.31) ahead of Lijewski (3rd) and Drew Cooper (4th). In the 100-yard freestyle, the junior was challenged by Middleboro, but amped it up on the last lap to win in a season low 51.34. Ike Fontaine touched third and Chris Kimball was fifth. Chaisson stroked to a third State cut in the 200-yard individual medley, ahead of Zelvis and Potash. The senior co-captain also won the 100-yard backstroke over Art Su and Lijewski.  Ng was the top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke edging out teammates Duncan Edgar and Keelan Murphy. The Dragons won two relays with Crowell, Sommer, Ng and Neves teaming to win the 200-yard medley relay, while Crowell, Art Su, White and Neves cruised to first in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Ng, Davidson, Lijewski and Terizzi placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay. After starting the week with matches against Barnstable and Pembroke, the boys will now get ready to entertain Quincy/North Quincy at home on Thursday at 3:30 |
