The Duxbury girls’ swim team cruised to two wins last week and improved its record to 4-0, as underclassmen provided the catalyst for the 90-72 win against Norwell last Thursday at the Percy Walker Pool Emily Hutchinson showed her versatility, racing both the longest and shortest events of the meet. In the 50-yard freestyle she blazed a personal-best 26.47, just a half-second faster than Kaitlyn Buckley (26.69). Laura Nelson finished fourth. A few events later, Hutchinson started off with the lead in the 500-yard freestyle and never gave it up, winning by a pool length (6:22.78) and completing a sweep with Haley Chatlin and Hilary Dudley right behind. Freshman speedster Avery Riddle increased Duxbury’s lead, nailing down a State cut (2:07.12) in the 200-yard freestyle. Molly Davis inched out Katelyn Coghlan to take second. Not to be outdone, freshman Krista Librett touched out Sarah Goldberg by 2/100 of second in the 100-yard butterfly, with both swimmers making Sectional cuts. Dudley finished right behind. In the 100-yard backstroke, Riddle, Goldberg, and Kelly Masgul raced even for the first two laps, but in the end Goldberg took charge, winning in 1:06.18. The race of the day was the 100-yard breaststroke where Coghlan faced off against senior co-captain Lauren Wilson and Cassie Sweeney. Once again, it was a freshman that prevailed, as Sweeney touched in 1:19.90 just an eyelash off the Sectional qualifying time. Buckley made her fifth State cut with an easy win in the 100-yard freestyle (57.59) over Pipp (59.85) and Laura Husted (1:01.94). Pipp was the top finisher in the 200-yard individual medley, edging out Librett (3rd) and Dudley (4th). The 200-yard medley relay featured a season-best performance by Buckley, Sweeney, Librett and Hutchinson (2:03.31). However, the 200-yard freestyle relay was a different story. Riddle took it out fast and managed a slight lead, but Norwell closed the gap midway through the race during the second and third legs raced by Davis and Husted. The two teams were dead even when Librett dove in for the fourth leg, touching first in a 1:51.84 that was just under the State qualifying time. The final relay was the 400-yard freestyle where Pipp, Goldberg, Buckley and Hutchinson won by a half-pool length. Lauren Feeney, Lindsay Jordan, Chatlin and Dierdre Murphy had to hang tough to take third in the event. Veterans Goldberg and Buckley led the team to a 102-72 win over Middleboro at home last Tuesday. Both juniors won two individual events and contributed on relays, with Goldberg posting a season-low time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.65). Husted and Kassie Sweeny were third and fourth, respectively. In the 500-yard endurance event Goldberg won easily with another personal best of 5:37.53, while Riddle took second in a State qualifying time of 5:48.94 and Katie Brasington was fourth. Buckley also had another good meet, touching first and making her State cut in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.16). Senior co-captain Pipp was third and Librett was fourth. In the 200-yard individual medley, Buckley just touched out Riddle for the win, while Coghlan finished fourth. Several swimmers posted personal bests in other individual events. Hutchinson erased her previous best in the 50-yard freestyle (26.75), splashing ahead of Dudley (2nd) and Sweeney (3rd). Librett improved her time in the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.43), with Hutchinson and Brady completing a sweep of the event. Pipp took top honors in the 100-yard freestyle (59.53) ahead of Husted and Chatlin, while Coghlan glided to a win in the 100-yard breaststroke, nosing out Brasington and Casey Walker. In the diving competition, Carly Tillotson won easily racking up 152.7 points, as Kelly Masgul took second (120.83) and Alix Brady was sixth. Duxbury won all three relays, with Buckley, Pipp, Brady and Hutchinson combining to win the 200-yard medley relay by five seconds. In the 200-yard freestyle relay it was Goldberg swimming anchor, who touched out a Middleboro swimmer to give her teammates (Dudley, Coghlan and Brady) a one-second win. Wilson, Maddie Aglow, Lindsay Currier and Nelson swam a great race to take third. Riddle, Pipp, Goldberg and Hutchinson teamed to win the 400-yard freestyle relay, closing out the meet. The girls will entertain Quincy/North Quincy at home on Thursday at 3:30 at the Percy Walker Pool. |
