Girls move on to South Sectional soccer final
Friday, November 14, 2008 12:50 PM

At least the DHS girls’ soccer team has better luck in overtime than the New England Patriots.

After a 2-1 OT win over Scituate on Tuesday, the #12-seeded Lady Dragons stunned #9-seeded Wellesley with a goal in the first minute of overtime on Thursday night to beat the Raiders, 1-0, and advance to the South Sectional finals for the first time since 2000.

Duxbury will take on #3-seed Oliver Ames of Easton (17-2-2) on Saturday or Sunday.

The Lady Dragons came out strong in the first five minutes of their game that was played at Canton HS, as senior midfielder Jess Lizza putting a testing shot on the Wellesley net that just went by the post.

It didn’t take the Raider’s coaching staff long to see that they had their hands full, as they called a timeout just ten minutes into the game to try and slow the Lady Dragons down.

Wellesley came out of the timeout and immediately tested Duxbury goalie Emily Brook, who would have the best night of her young career.

After play slowed down and remained in the middle of the field for the next 15 minutes, Melissa Gavin fed a crossing pass to Caitlin Burke, whose shot went by netminder Midge Daniel, but went wide of the net.

Outstanding defensive play by senior captains Sarah Wooley and Tristen Chin kept the Wellesley offense relatively quiet in the first 20 minutes, but the Raiders started to apply the pressure with just under 10 minutes left in the half. It continued over a two-minute span before Coach Emerson Coleman called for a timeout before things got out of hand.

Wellesley had its best chance of the half with 4:41 remaining when a shot went off the post and Brook was forced to stop a follow-up shot while spread on the ground.

Momentum continued for the Raiders in the second half, as Brook was called on numerous times to come up with big saves, while the Duxbury offense found it extremely difficult to get any serious offensive thrust going.

With less than two minutes to go in regulation, Kristine Welsh-Loveman had a direct kick from 40 yards out, but Brook once again came up big to send the game into OT.

It didn’t take long for the Lady Dragons to hop on the bus, as they pushed the ball into the Wellesley zone to the left of Daniel, with Gavin taking a pass from the baseline and firing on net. Daniel made the initial save diving to her right, but she couldn’t control the rebound that found its way onto the foot of Burke, who fired into the left corner of the net just 49 seconds into OT.

“This is the second time in the tournament we faced a league champion,” said Coleman. “We had seen them play, so I knew going in this would be a one-goal game. Both teams played their hearts out and maximized what they could do and left everything they had on the field. We survived and now we move on.”

The South Sectional finals will be played Sunday against Oliver Ames in Weymouth at 3:15 p.m.
