The Duxbury Youth Football 7th-grade team engineered its way to the OCYFL Division 5 Superbowl with a 22-16 win over the Hingham Raiders on Saturday night in Scituate.

The Dragons had a 6-2 record going into the playoffs, with one of those losses being a 26-8 pasting by the Raiders back in October.

On Saturday night Duxbury’s supporters had good vibes that the outcome would be different, as the Dragons marched 68 yards on the opening drive to punch the ball into the endzone. The key to the opening drive were huge holes created by the offensive line of Marcus Urann, Matt Whear, Chris Mulone, Drew Dowling, James Higgins, Matt Burger, Drew Michaelson and center Ricky Lippard.

The next test for the team was to stop the potent Hingham offense, and they did after seven plays, forcing the Raiders to punt. A solid defensive effort by Victor Moitinho, Andrew Baker, Nick Marrocco, and Kevin Dibona, along with Wesley Quinzani and Drew Hadley at the corners, stopped the Raiders dead in their tracks.

The Dragons got the ball back in the beginning of the second quarter and used the powerful running of Khai Perry and the leadership of Brendan Burke to go ahead, 14-0. But Hingham didn’t fold its tent, as it completed a 40-yard pass with five seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 14-8.

The second half started much like the first, as a tough Duxbury defense stopped Hingham with key hits by Perry, Jack Herlihy, Higgins, Scott Whear, Lippard and Marrocco.

After getting the ball back, the Dragons started a drive on their own 30-yard line, where they continued the drive and were faced with a fourth down and six yards to go. Lining up in punt formation, Burke took a direct snap from Lippard and ran for eight yards behind the blocking of end Julien Pelletier, tackle Matt Burger, and guard Chris Malone to keep the drive alive. The drive continued and ended when Perry broke up the middle for a touchdown and a 22-8 lead.

Hingham roared back and put its two-minute offense into overdrive, scoring with 1:50 left on the clock. The Raiders tried executing an onside kick, but the play of special teamers Will Butler, Will O’Toole, Mitch Berry and Andrew Fotta secured the victory for the Dragons.

Duxbury now moves on to its second consecutive Superbowl and will take on either Marshfield or Bridgewater-Raynham at Middleboro High School this weekend.
