Alec and Nick Stewart of Duxbury represented the Duxbury Bay Maritime School in the 2008 United States Optimist Dinghy Association Atlantic Coast Championships in Brant Beach, New Jersey. The regatta, sponsored by the Brant Beach Yacht Club, hosted 262 youth sailors from across the US, as well as Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Curacao, and Canada. Conditions for the event were perfect, with winds ranging from 10-20 knots over the course of the two-day regatta. Alec, 13, finished the first day of racing in 98th place, then posted strong finishes on day two, including a fifth and sixth-place in his fleet, to finish in 77th place overall. Nick, in his first full year of Opti racing, sailed well, including a 17th-place finish that helped him earn 198th overall. Alec has already qualified for the USODA National Team Trials to be held at Noroton Yacht Club in Connecticut in April. |
