The weather wasn’t the only thing that was unseasonably warm on Monday afternoon at the Gannon Municipal Golf Course in Lynn: the Concord-Carlisle Patriots were too.

Taking on the cream of the crop in a battle for the Division II State golf championship, the Duxbury Dragons were one of the many teams that watched in amazement as Concord-Carlisle stunned the gallery with a 16-stroke victory over Nauset to take home the crown.

It wasn’t one of Duxbury’s better efforts of the year, but their 328 score earned them a fifth-place finish on a course that proved nearly impossible for all the teams except C-C.

Few, if any of the teams had players shoot below 80, but the Patriots managed to shoot rounds of 73-76-78-78 for a winning total of 305.

Finishing behind Nauset (321) in third place was Woburn at 322, followed by Wellesley (327) and the Dragons.

Six players represented each school, with the best four scores counting in the shot total.

Sophomores Jonathan Stoddard and Billy Curley were the low scorers for Duxbury with rounds of 80, while Kevin Kuckuk (84) and senior captain Mark Tedeschi both came in at 84.

“This was really a tricky course,” said Tedeschi. “It was pretty tight with a lot of irons in the woods, and the greens were tough because of the pin positions. If you asked everyone I think you’d find out there were a lot of three putts out there. I don’t think anyone lit it up out there today and that is what we needed.”

In the individual competition, Nauset’s Jeff Duggan took home the prize with a 75, while Steve Winslow of Concord-Carlisle and Dillon Glynn of Hudson tied for second with a round of 76.

“These greens were very tough,” said Coach Jack Stoddard. “It was also a very hilly course and I think it beat them up and some of them got tired at the end. Some of our kids had bad starts and pulled it back at the end, while others did just the opposite. This year this group of kids has been very competitive, and the one thing they didn’t do today was quit. They kept coming back.”

The Dragons should be a lock to be back here next year, as the team is loaded with what are now experienced sophomores, who have had a chance for regular competition since the first day of the season.

“I wanted to thank Assistant Coaches John Blake and Tom Benoit for all the help they have given me this year, and I also wanted to thank the staff at the Duxbury Yacht Club for allowing us to use the course this fall. I think it shows that everyone involved has contributed to the strong program we have in Duxbury.”
