Girls qualify for soccer tournament
Monday, October 20, 2008 12:00 AM

It’s feast or famine for the Lady Dragon (10-4) soccer team that qualified for the MIAA Tournament last week.

Beating the weak sisters in the Patriot League doesn’t seem to be a problem for the girls after routing Quincy (11-0) and Randolph (9-0), but when it comes to the more competitive teams in the league it appears Coach Emerson Coleman’s squad is having some problems.

Sporting a 2-3 record in its last five games, Duxbury has been shutout in all three losses by a combined four goals.

With perennial powers Silver Lake, Whitman-Hanson, Plymouth North, and Marshfield on tap for the final two weeks of the season, it’s time for the Lady Dragons to step it up a notch or two if they have any desire to go deep into post-season play.

After losing to Pembroke and Hingham, Coleman had a talk with his team about the need to go a full 80 minutes every time out.

“In those two losses we fiddled around for 20 minutes and shortened the game,” said Coleman. “The pressure is all on us for 60 minutes when you do that.”

Despite losing another close league game in a 1-0 Scituate shutout on Thursday, Coleman had no complaints about his team’s effort.

“We played the full 80 minutes and must have out-shot them 25-5,” said the Duxbury coach. “I hate to admit it, but it might have been our best game of the year, but we couldn’t put it in the net.”

Freshman Nikki Yang’s second-half goal proved to be the game-winner, as Scituate goaltender Alannah Woodford kept the Duxbury offense at bay.

After tackling Silver Lake yesterday afternoon, the girls will travel to #2-ranked Whitman-Hanson on Thursday night for the second game of a double-header with the Panthers that is scheduled for 6:30.
