It was another strong week for Coach Pam Manley’s field hockey team, as they opened on the road with Bishop Fenwick (1-1) and concluded it with a pair of wins over Pembroke (4-3) and Scituate (2-0) in Patriot League action.

The win over Scituate qualified the team for post-season play with its record at 8-3-3 and four games remaining, and also extended the Lady Dragons unbeaten streak to nine games.

The game with Pembroke was a high-scoring affair with the Lady Dragons taking a 1-0 lead with 19:25 to go in the first half when Tracy Clough converted a pass from Grace Nissi to beat Pembroke’s Brenda McAlear.

Less than three minutes later the Titans battled back when Sam Fallon tied the game at 1-1.

Duxbury controlled play for most of the half, earning consecutive corners that would eventually lead to a 2-1 advantage when Mimi Smith put one past McAlear with an assist to Cassandra Nissi with 12:08 left in the half.

The lead didn’t last long as action started in the second half, with Pembroke’s Sam Flaherty putting one past Julia Hannon that tied the score at 2-2.

Clough scored her second of the game two minutes later when she tipped a Smith shot high into the top corner past McAlear for a 3-2 lead.

Duxbury had its hands full with the visitors, but managed to get some breathing room when Grace Nissi put one through the legs of McAlear for what looked like an insurance tally with 14:47 left in the game.

But as they had done all afternoon, the Titans battled back and made life uncomfortable for Manley, as they cut the deficit to one when Krystal Barnard scored with 5:33 remaining.

The Duxbury defense tightened up, and allowed the team to walk away with the win.

Clough and Grace Nissi each scored for Duxbury in its tournament clincher.

“We learned a lesson in that Hanover tie,” said Manley. “If we come out and play tough and with confidence, and not worry about anything and just do it, we can play with anybody.”

The team will get a chance to show how tough they are this week when they play four games in five days before next Sunday’s All-Star game in Duxbury at noon.
