Golfers clinch league title
Thursday, October 16, 2008 10:02 AM

Apparently it’s not a good idea to upset the Duxbury boys’ golf team. After a stunning one-stroke loss to Hingham that ended the Dragons’ winning streak at eleven, they took it out on the rest of their Patriot League foes last week, along with a 10-stroke victory over Xaverian.

In the process, Duxbury wrapped up the Patriot League crown with a 197-214 win over Silver Lake on Friday at the Halifax Country Club.

Coming off the Hingham loss, the Dragons began the week with an easy victory (207-234) over Quincy, as senior captain Mark Tedeschi (39/5 pars), freshman Curtis Owen (39/5 pars), and sophomore James Magner (39/4 pars/one birdie) tied for medalist honors.

Seniors Andy Puopolo (43/4 pars) and Wes Barrington (47/4 pars) rounded out the Duxbury scoring.

The thought of four matches in four days didn’t seem to faze the Dragons, as they hosted the Scituate Sailors on Wednesday at the DYC course and walked a way with a 29-shot win (194-224).

Duxbury’s top five golfers all scored better than Scituate’s Nate Kelly (41), with sophomore’s Jonathan Stoddard (39/5pars/one birdie), Phil Sciretta (39/7 pars), and Billy Curley (39/2 pars/2 birdies) sharing the low score of the afternoon.

The consistency and depth that has marked this year’s team was never more evident then when Barrington (38/4 pars/2 birdies) and Tedeschi (40/3 pars/2 birds) contributed to the team’s lowest score of the week.

Stoddard was on fire Thursday afternoon in the 323-333 victory over Xaverian, as the red-headed sophomore toured the DYC course with a par round of 36, including four birdies to beat Xaverian’s Anthony Breen by a stroke.

Friday’s title clinching win over Silver Lake advanced the Dragons’ record to 15-2, as sophomore Kevin Kuckuk came out of no where to record a 37 for medalist honors.

The trio of Stoddard, Sciretta, and Puopolo all scored 39, while Tedeschi came up the rear with a 43.

After taking on Whitman-Hanson yesterday afternoon in Duxbury, the team will travel to Barnstable this afternoon for a tri-match with the Red Raiders and powerhouse BC High. It’s a good way to end the season for Coach Jack Stoddard’s squad, as the Eagles should bring out the best in the Dragons, who will start their drive for a State title on Tuesday morning when they travel to the Easton Country Club for the MIAA Division II South Sectionals.092408tedeschimark
