The boys’ soccer team has suddenly put its season into second gear, stunning the Hingham Harbormen with a come-from-behind 3-2 win on Friday night in Duxbury.

Since being 3-3, the boys have reeled off four victories in their last five games and now need just two more wins to qualify for post-season play.

This was the biggest win of the year for the Dragons, as they were shutout (3-0) by the Harbormen three weeks ago, drawing the wrath of Coach John Tocci, who questioned whether some members of his team had the heart to play hard.

His comments obviously hit home, as their play has been mostly positive since.

The Dragons came out strong after the opening whistle, earning a corner in the first minute of play. But the Harbormen responded with a couple direct kicks over the next seven minutes that tested the Duxbury defense.

The Harbormen seemed to gain momentum as the half wore on and earned a corner kick to the right of goaltender Dan McManus with 19:30 left in the half. As the shot came out of the corner, McManus had trouble controlling the ball, leaving Hingham’s Joseph Eisenbies to pounce on it and beat McManus for a 1-0 lead that held up through halftime.

The Dragons looked upbeat coming out for the second half, and it didn’t take long for that positive attitude to take hold, as Joe Carroll beat Hingham keeper Ryan Driscoll to tie the game at 1-1.

Hingham’s Federico Kelly and Duxbury’s Pat Walsh would swap goals later in the half to make it 2-2, giving the Dragons what appeared to be a moral victory as time ran down.

But junior Dan Sangster wasn’t in any mood to accept a tie, as he unloaded a shot from 25 yards out late in the game that was partial deflected as it headed toward Driscoll and found its way to the far corner of the net to secure the upset win.

The victory was a nice ending to a week that started on a down note with a 4-2 loss to North Quincy.

It looked like the Dragons would escape the half with a one-goal deficit, but at the 36-minute mark NQ struck again, as a beautiful rush from the left side resulted in a pass across the middle that was deposited behind McManus for a 2-0 halftime lead.

It just wasn’t meant to be for Duxbury, as the Red Raiders made it 3-0 just 10 minutes into the second half. A give-and-go through the Dragon defense left McManus defenseless and put them behind the eight ball for the rest of the afternoon.

The Dragons finally caught a break six minutes later when a NQ back pass didn’t have enough mustard on it, allowing Duxbury’s Jimmy Landry to run on to it and send his shot along the ground and into the back of the net to narrow the margin to 3-1.

Whatever chance the Dragons had of getting back in the game ended at the 22-minute mark when an NQ penalty-kick put the game out of reach at 4-1.

Tommy Drummy would notch his own penalty kick 33 minutes in for the final score of the afternoon.

Duxbury has an excellent chance at sewing up a post-season berth this week when they tangle with Quincy and Scituate, both of whom lost to the Dragons earlier in the season.
