After out-scoring their opponents by a 20-2 margin in a four-game winning streak, the Duxbury girls’ soccer team hit the skids this week in a pair of shutout losses to Pembroke (2-0) and Hingham (1-0).

Pembroke was a team to be reckoned with after they gave Whitman-Hanson a run for its money before losing in a 6-4 shootout, so dropping one to the Titans wasn’t as much of a shock as was Friday afternoon’s embarrassing loss to the Harborwomen.

Duxbury had demolished Hingham in the second game of the season (6-0), so there was little reason to think the hosts would put up much of a battle.

With play staying mostly in the midfield, the Lady Dragons couldn’t seem to muster any kind of offensive thrust that would put pressure on Hingham keeper Danielle McNiff (8 saves).

The Harborwomen left the field at halftime in a scoreless game, convinced they had a shot at upsetting their Patriot League rival. When they took the field for the second half it was obvious they wanted it more.

Controlling play throughout, and beating the Lady Dragons to just about every 50/50 ball, there seemed little doubt Hingham was on its way to victory.

Just six minutes into the second half, freshman forward Julia Leahy scored the game’s only goal when she cut in front of Duxbury keeper Emily Brook as she was about to grab the ball and redirected it past the sophomore for the winning goal.

“I think this is a carry over from our loss to Pembroke and I think we’re in a funk right now,” said Coach Emerson Coleman. “We had all kinds of pressure in that second half against Pembroke and didn’t score. Today we played for eighty minutes and didn’t have a meaningful shot on goal. We got some good through balls and some good scoring opportunities, but if you don’t get any shots you’re not going to win.”

The girls need just one more victory to qualify for tournament action and should get it this week when they take on Quincy, Scituate, and Randolph: the perfect prescription for solving their scoring woes.
