The 8th grade DYF Varsity Midget’s beat the Hanson Warriors, 30-0, at Duxbury Middle School on Sunday. It was a complete team effort, as every one of the 31 players contributed to the win, with a stingy Dragon defense contributing two scores of its own and remained unscored upon.

Jonny ‘Lightning’ Hurvitz flashes by a pair of Warriors en route to a TD in Sunday’s 30-0 victory over Hanson.

A spectacular 60-yard interception return by Michael Roberts and an exciting heads-up play by Kyle Howard, who alertly picked a dropped lateral and ran it in for a touchdown from midfield, were the game’s highlights.

Roberts again had an acrobatic interception and nearly ran it back for a score, but he just barely hit the chalk line as he sped down the sideline.

Aggressive, hard hitting play by CJ LoConte, Bill Breen, Owen Grey, James Mattes, Alden Fontana, Marshall McCarthy and the rest of the defense didn’t let the Hanson offense breath all day. After quickly realizing it was impossible to gain any yardage on the ground, the Warriors turned to their formidable passing attack. After they completed a couple of passes, the Dragon secondary made the necessary adjustments to halt drives and ultimately led to the defensive scores, with Jack Ball, Nick Kates, John Geary, Tyler Sunderland, JP Geiger and Roberts thwarting the Warrior passing game.

Led by QB John Geary, the Dragon offense proved up to the task, as the running attack was hitting on all cylinders. Bill Weld, Drew Lawrence, Winston Shromm, Bill Breen and Robert Kosherek opened some big holes up front for running backs Marshall McCarthy, Pat Buell, Keenan Siciliano and Jon Hurvitz, who gains some tough yards up front.

McCarthy started the scoring for the Dragons, as he powered his way up the middle behind Breen and Weld. Celebrating his birthday Sunday, Hurvitz took a quick pitch from Geary, read the blocks of Chris Arthurs and McCarthy and sprinted deftly down the sidelines for a 55-yard TD scamper.
