Field hockey stages recovery

FIVE-HOLE: Duxbury goaltender Julia Hannon gets set to close her pads and deny a Hingham scoring bid.

Duxbury looked like it was on its way to its second straight defeat when it trailed the Harborwomen, 1-0, at halftime on a Bailey Millard goal at 15:12.

“We promised ourselves that we wouldn’t give up, and we kept repeating ‘we will win’ at halftime,” said Coach Pam Manley.

The positive attitude in the halftime break transferred nicely to the field when the Lady Dragons came out much stronger in the second half and tied the game.

Junior Lila Haffey’s goal at 21:18 found its way through a maze of players and eluded Hingham netminder Ali Lund.

A pumped up Duxbury squad began to assert itself shortly thereafter and pressured the Hingham end, forging ahead 2-1 when senior Tracy Clough knocked home the rebound of a bouncing ball past Lund with 8:11 left in the game.

The Lady Dragon defense held the fort in the final minutes, as the return of senior captain Anie Grunwald (injured vs. Marshfield) was instrumental in tightening up a young and inexperienced defense that had faltered against the Rams.

It’s a busy week for the team, as they battled perennial MA power Hopkinton on Monday, entertained Middleboro yesterday, and face Patriot League nemesis Hanover on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 in Duxbury.
