The league will have division champions for the following sports: soccer, football, cross country, boys’ golf, basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, indoor track, tennis, outdoor track, baseball and softball.

Division champions are awarded for those sports in which at least 10 member schools sponsor that particular sport.{sidebar id=4}

The league will have a single champion for the following sports: field hockey, volleyball, boys’ ice hockey, swimming and lacrosse.

Duxbury’s boys’ ice hockey team competes as an independent and cannot contend for a league title. Duxbury currently does not sponsor the sport of volleyball, but there will be an opportunity for girls to learn and play the game a few nights a week this fall.

Girls’ golf, girls’ ice hockey, skiing and sailing all compete in other leagues.

Schools were split into the two divisions based on enrollment, competitiveness, participation percentages and demographics. The league will review divisional alignments every two years to ensure a competitive balance within each division.

2008 Patriot Bowl

This year’s football season will be unique in that the Patriot League will have two divisions, but only one playoff berth. It is expected that for the 2009 season the Patriot League will receive two playoff spots, one for each division.  In order to decide which division winner will play in the MIAA playoffs for the 2008 season, the league will hold the Patriot Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 15th.  This game will match up the two division winners at a neutral site. All other league schools will also play a game that weekend (on either Nov. 14 or Nov. 15) matching up the respective place winners from each division. (i.e. the third-place school from the Keenan Division will play the third-place school from the Fisher Division.)  The winner of the Patriot Bowl will move on to state semi-final game on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving with the winner of that game playing in the Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.  The loser of the Patriot Bowl will play the Dual County League’s small division champion.{sidebar id=1}

Last Friday marked the first night game during the month of Sept. since 2004. Both teams on the field showed plenty of heart, respect and sportsmanship towards one another. However, there was an ugly incident at the end of the football game in which many Duxbury children taunted the outgoing Xaverian student section using four-letter words and throwing garbage. Almost all of these children were not Duxbury High School students, but much younger. Parents are reminded that they must not leave their children unattended at games. Also, out of respect to our hard working cheerleaders, please refrain from going on to the playing field while they are performing. Friday night football needs to be a safe, positive and fun experience for all spectators and players, no matter which side they came to cheer.
