Dragons football tunes up for opener with Xaverian

Captains Shane Dibona and Sean Cross are expected to have big seasons
The scheduling of Division I powerhouse Xaverian for the Dragons’ home opener on Friday night must say something about how Coach Dave Maimaron views his team for the upcoming 2008 season.

After going 9-2 last year, you would think Duxbury would be proud of its accomplishments. But a heart-breaking loss to Hingham that cost them the Patriot League title as well as a potential Super Bowl bid left a bad taste in their mouths, similar to the Patriots going 18-1.

While the Dragons did suffer some losses up front, they seem to have mined some fast and able replacements that could put Duxbury back on course for a league title and post-season appearance.

Graduation did make a dent in the roster, but it had little effect on two key positions in the Duxbury backfield where veteran QB Sean Cross and running back Shane Dibona return after All-Star seasons.

The senior captains will team up with linebacker Kyle Gavoni to lead Maimaron’s squad in what is shaping up to be an exciting season.
