The Dragons are making it look too easy in the MIAA Division I East Lacrosse Tournament.

After toying with Acton-Boxboro (10-3) over the weekend in first-round play, Duxbury took on Marshfield Tuesday afternoon at Chandler Field in quarterfinal action and destroyed their archrivals, 20-3.{sidebar id=4} If the Rams had any pre-game strategy to slow the Dragons down, they waited too long to implement it, as Grant Marston, Dan May, Jake Harvey, Scott Austin, and Hakeem Lecky scored in the first 3:23 of the game to give the hosts a demoralizing 5-0 lead. Marshfield finally broke the streak when Jeff Sullivan scored during a man-up situation at the 5:01 mark, but the Dragons couldn’t be stopped, as Derek Sweet, Austin, and Gus Quinzani would score again to give their team an 8-2 first-quarter lead. 
OFF TO THE RACES – Duxbury’s Quinn Cully leaves a pair of Marshfield defenders in his wake.
Everything was working in the Duxbury offense, as Marshfield’s goaltender had to be shell-shocked by the continuous bombardment in the Rams’ end. In the first minute of the second quarter, Quinzani and Quinn Cully made it 10-2, taking the life out of the Rams and allowing Coach Chris Sweet to use his whole bench the rest of the afternoon. The duo would score again midway through the quarter, and with Austin’s third goal coming with 1:35 left in the half, the Dragons would enter the intermission with a commanding 13-2 lead. Having taken the starch out of the Rams early, Duxbury found little resistance in the final 24 minutes. Goals by Harvey (2), Sweet, and Austin made it 17-3 after three quarters, while Sweet’s bench was equally effective in the fourth quarter when freshman Brain Barry (2) and senior Neil O’Connor added to the Rams’ misery.{sidebar id=1} The Dragons are now two games away from their fifth straight Division I State title and will face the winner of Wednesday night’s game between Xaverian and Needham in semifinal action in Duxbury. The game will likely to be played on Friday or Sunday, due to Saturday’s high school graduation. |
