The last week of the regular season saw the girls’ lacrosse team face all levels of competition, as they opened with #1-ranked Westwood, sought revenge against a sub-.500 Scituate team, and closed out the schedule with a tough #8-ranked Needham squad.

Monday’s game saw the Lady Dragons put in a much better effort against the Wolverines than compared to the 19-5 trouncing they took in the season opener.{sidebar id=4}

Trying to stay close to Westwood is just about impossible, but Duxbury did its best in the first half and trailed 12-7 at halftime.

The second half started with both teams matching goals through the first 15 to 20 minutes, but Westwood’s depth and experience paid off with a four-goal blitz in the final minutes that left Duxbury on the short end of a 19-10 score.

Senior Trish Babson had a solid effort against Westwood with four goals, while Jill Caramello added a pair of goals to go along with single tallies by Ginny Desmery, Meg Muncey, Erin Levesque, and Caitlin Burke.

While the competition wasn’t anywhere near the level of Monday’s game, the Lady Dragons had a lot to prove on Tuesday since the Sailors tied them at 10-10 just a week earlier.{sidebar id=1}

This time they took no prisoners, as they bolted to an 11-4 halftime lead and never let up in the second half while scoring six more goals in a 17-5 win.

It was back to more serious business on Wednesday, with Coach Sue Paull lecturing her troops about the importance of a win over Needham when it comes to tournament seedings.

The Rockets did an excellent job of controlling the ball early, as they methodically worked the perimeter, and struck for a pair of goals by Elizabeth Morse in the first five minutes.

Thirty seconds later Jill Caramello picked up a loose ball off the face-off and raced down the middle of the field where she drew a call and scored on the restart to close the gap to 2-1.

After a Sara Reddington goal made it 3-1, Duxbury retaliated with goals by Katie Griffin and Erin Levesque to tie the game.

Scoring streaks would be the norm the rest of the first half, as Needham went on a 4-1 run for a 7-4 lead with 8:47 left in the half. But Duxbury went on a streak of its own, out-scoring the Rockets 4-1 over the final 7:41 to tie the game at 8-8 at halftime.

Needham would find holes in the Duxbury defense early in the second half, as they peppered goalie Stephanie Hoomis with a three-goal outburst that put them ahead for good at 11-8.

Trish Babson and Caitlin Burke countered with goals to cut the deficit to 11-10, but Kelly Stenberg took over the contest in the final eight minutes with three consecutive goals to cement Needham’s 14-10 win.
