The Dragons won their fourth consecutive Patriot League-Keenan Division title last week with wins over Silver Lake (8-3) and Hanover (6-1), while the rest of their busy schedule included a 11-3 non-league win over Marshfield and a 5-0 shutout loss to Scituate.{sidebar id=4}

Solid pitching and incredible hitting have been the major factors for Duxbury’s seven wins in the last eight games, with freshman sensation Phil Sciretta leading the team in hitting with a whopping .467 average that has him getting attention as a possible MVP candidate.

In the win over Silver Lake, sophomore Jeff Blout raised his record to 4-2 as he whiffed eight Laker batters and allowed just four hits in five innings, with Connor Anderson coming on in relief to get the save.{sidebar id=1}

The hitting star of the afternoon was junior shortstop Sean Cross, who went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored, while classmate Colin Woods had two hits and knocked in three runs. Sciretta and Shane Dibona also chipped in with two hits apiece.

Baseballs were flying all over Chandler Field on Wednesday against Marshfield as the Dragons banged out 20 hits, including the first varsity hits for senior catcher Nick Dow and junior infielder Liam Bevins.

Senior Brett Bartlett went the distance for his fourth win of the season, scattering seven hits and walking just two batters, while senior Rich Sciretta had a monster day at the plate going 4 for 4 with two RBI and scoring four runs.

The rest of the lineup was equally damaging, as Phil Sciretta had three hits, and Dibona, Cross and Tyler Genereux had two each.

The hitting rampage came to a halt on Thursday when the Dragons faced University of Georgia-bound, and likely major league draft choice, Blaine O’Brien.

The 6’8” fireballer allowed just two hits and struck out 15 Dragons while hurling the shutout. Two runs in the top of the first inning was all the Scituate senior would need, as he settled down after a lead-off single by Cross and allowed just another single by Jack Garrity the rest of the way.

Rain cut short Duxbury’s fourth game in five days, as Anderson got the win in the five-inning affair with Hanover.

The pop was back in the Duxbury bats as Dibona and Bartlett hit solo home runs, while Rich Sciretta and Woods (2 RBI) contributed two hits each.

“We’re playing pretty well right now,” said Coach Barney Earle. “We’re really swinging our bats and getting good starting pitching.”

Not only is Phil Sciretta on fire at the plate, several of his teammates aren’t that far behind with Bartlett (.405), Dibona (.387), and brother Rich (.370) challenging the rookie for team leadership.

After Wednesday night’s finale in Rockland at 6 p.m., the Dragons hope their bats will remain hot, as they get ready for the Division II South Sectionals that promises to be one of the toughest brackets in eastern MA.{sidebar id=6}
