Golfers Sit Atop MA Bay League-S

It may have happened since the advent of the DHS girls’ golf team, but no one around the team seems to know if the Lady Dragons have ever beaten Barnstable on the links.

It may have happened since the advent of the DHS girls’ golf team, but no one around the team seems to know if the Lady Dragons have ever beaten Barnstable on the links.

Now it is official after Duxbury knocked off the Red Raiders last Wednesday afternoon with a 4-2 victory on Cape Cod.{sidebar id=4}

“The girls are starting to believe they can be as good as anyone out there,” said first-year girls’ Coach Jack Stoddard. “Up until now they thought every other team was better than they are.”

After frittering away a close match to Barnstable in the season opener (3.5-2.5), the Lady Dragons have been on a roll with six straight wins after beating Silver Lake the following day.{sidebar id=1}

With the streak has come a place atop the South Division of the MASS Bay League with a legitimate shot at the overall title to be played this coming Monday at the King’s Way Golf Course in Yarmouthport.

Emma Kellar continues to be a major contributor to the Lady Dragons’ success, and she proved it again against Barnstable when she recorded a big win in the #3 slot by winning her match 4 and 3.

Freshman Briana Connolly and Colleen O’Connor also had big wins, as Connolly took the #4 match with a 3 and 2 win, while O’Connor prevailed at #5 with a 3 and 1 triumph.

Senior co-captain Meg Wyrtzen shot a medalist round of 47 and halved her match at #2, and Kendall Johnson did likewise at #6 to account for the Lady Dragons’ points.

Jenn Geary went seven holes for Duxbury before losing the #1 match, 3 and 2.

There wasn’t quite the excitement on Thursday when Duxbury took on the Lakers at the DYC course, but it did give Stoddard a chance to rest his regulars, and the team didn’t miss a beat.

With Geary and Wyrtzen taking the day off, everyone else moved up in the order, as Kellar took over at #1 and easily won her match, 4 and 3, over Ali Mulvey.

Connolly was in and out in a hurry with a 5 and 4 win over Meghan Hurley at #2, while O’Connor posted a 3 and 2 win over Lauren Grasse at #3.

Junior Sophie Campanelli was back in the lineup against the Lakers and made quick work of Nicole Claussen with a 4 and 2 win at #4, while Johnson defeated Kelsey Smith, 3 and 2.

Freshman Jenny Moore made her debut at #6, but couldn’t squeeze one out against Ashley Davis and lost 1-up.

The future is certainly looking bright for the Lady Dragons’ golf team, as junior Sam Sinclair and freshman Allie Martin won the two alternate matches. Sinclair bested SL’s Michaela Decker 2-up, while Martin took care of business with a win over Rachael Webby.

After taking on Dennis-Yarmouth on Monday, the girls return home on Wednesday afternoon for a match with Nauset at 3:15 at DYC. {sidebar id=6}
