Girls Tee Off On Cape Opponents

Coach Jack Stoddard had no idea what he was getting into when he took over the coaching duties of the DHS girls’ golf team. Now that he has had three weeks under his belt with his players, the veteran boys’ coach likes what he sees.

“These kids are working real hard when they are out there,” said Stoddard. “I have to give a lot of credit to my assistants for that. Tom Benoit, John Blake, and Rich Henninger have been great with these kids. We’ve had to do a lot more teaching with the girls then I do with the boys, but we can see it is paying off because the girls are starting to believe they are pretty good.”{sidebar id=4}

The girls have been taking the approach that their actions speak louder then words.

With victories over Falmouth (4.5-1.5) and Nauset (6-0), the girls are riding a four-match winning streak that could easily be five after they faltered in the season opener against Barnstable.

In the surprise win over Falmouth, Emma Kellar was the big winner for Duxbury at #3, as she bested Beth Brennan, 4 and 3, scoring a double-bogey or better on five of the six holes she played.{sidebar id=1}

Meg Wyrtzen also had an outstanding round at #2, as she won over Melinda Young, 3 and 2, while scoring a double-bogey or better on all eight holes.

Briana Connolly at #4 scored one of the team’s pars for the day in her 3 and 2 win over Mary Kate Robinson, while Colleen O’Connor registered the other par over Kately Souza in her 3 and 1 win at #5.

Maria Varonko halved her match with Kathleen Robinson at #6, and Jenn Geary had a tough opponent in Kelsey Walsh, who defeated the Lady Dragons’ #1 player, 4 and 3.

Duxbury traveled to Nauset the following day and made the journey worthwhile by blanking the Warriors.

It was a quick afternoon for the Lady Dragons, as Kellar, Connolly, O’Connor, and Sophia Campanelli won their matches 5 and 4, while Wyrtzen and Geary took their opponents with 3 and 2 scores.

Geary had an excellent round with three pars, and Connolly was right behind with a pair of pars.

On Wednesday the girls will travel to Barnstable, hoping to avenge their only loss of the season when they take on the Red Raiders at 3:15.{sidebar id=6}
