The Lady Dragons continue to struggle for success after a win and two losses against Notre Dame, Hingham, and Scituate this week.

Playing in the number one singles spot this week against Notre Dame was Emily Averna, who played Kim Loque.  Averna came from behind to win the first set, but in the end was defeated (7-5/1-6/2-6). The senior played strongly in an outstanding match against a very consistent opponent.{

Jill Dubuisson, playing second singles, dropped her match against Jill McQuggan, losing 0-6/0-6.

Freshman Michaela Dowd displayed her skills in the number three singles spot in her first match for the team, defeating opponent Nicole Hayes (6-3/ 6-4). Dowd played a strong game and was too much for her opponent.

Jackie Enniss and Liza Thomas played as a strong and consistent team at first doubles, as the duo beat their opponents, Katherine Colpup and Diane Curley, (6-2/2-6/6-4)

Annie Gluskin and Jane Morgan played in the number two doubles position against Inge Sipolis and Rory Madden. Duxbury came out on top in the match, winning 6-3/6-4. Gluskin and Morgan showed plenty of hustle and good ball placement to open spots on the court, as the Lady Dragons won the match 3-2.

On Wednesday the team suffered a 5-0 loss against a strong Hingham team. Averna played a tough opponent at first singles in Roberta Bergstein and lost in a pair of 2-6 scores. {sidebar id=1}

Dowd played hard, but in the end lost to opponent Ali Lund in the number two singles spot by scores of 0-6/2-6, while Gluskin took a break from her usual doubles spot to play in the third singles position and fell to Katherine Ripple 2-6/2-6

Enniss and Morgan, playing together for the first time, put up a good fight until the end before losing their match, 2-6/5-7.

Cory Tucker and Erin Nelson debuted as a team in the number-two doubles spot, playing an exciting three-set match against Katie Jacobsen and Holly Johnson that ended in a “first to seven” tie-breaker. The final scores were 6-4, 4-6, and 4-7 for the tiebreaker.

The Duxbury girls quickly put the loss behind them and geared up for Friday’s home-opener against Scituate.

Averna played one of the better singles players in the Patriot League in Maria Lazaris, who came out on top to win the match, 6-0/6-0.

Dowd lost (1-6/1-6) her match to Katie Pritchard, who played first singles for Scituate last year. 

Sophomore Julia Allen played her first match of the year in the number three singles spot against a tough Kate O’Connor and lost, 1-6/2-6

First-doubles players Enniss and Thomas played a great match against Brittany Gangemi and Caroline Martin, showing aggressiveness and good communication on the court while winning, 6-3/6-3. The two teams were very close and the match proved to be closer than the scores indicated.

 Playing again as a strong doubles team were Nelson and Tucker, who battled to the end in winning an exciting match against Scituate’s Devon Horgan and Destinee Ringler. The duo proved to be an aggressive team and hit many well-placed shots while winning their three-set match 6-2/4-6/7-5. 

Despite the losses, the Lady Dragons continue to work hard in practice and face back-to-back matches with Hanover and Marshfield this week.{sidebar id=6}
