The DHS girls’ tennis team stumbled in its first match of the season last Wednesday against Cohasset, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Clippers on the road.

Senior Jill Dubuisson won the only match for Duxbury at #3 singles, as she played a strong match against Cohasset’s Jenny McGruder. Dubuisson began the match with a close set that ended in a score of 5-7, but proceeded to win the next two matches with identical 6-4 wins. Dubuisson stayed aggressive throughout the match and had very few unforced errors.

Senior Emily Averna played #2 singles and dropped a 2-6/4-6 match to Maddie Altholtz, as the co-captain played aggressively throughout the match and played every point to win.

Captain Becca Winans played a tough match against Cohasset’s Meg Anderson in the #1 slot and had many good points against Anderson before dropping her match, 2-6/0-6.{sidebar id=1}

Seniors Liza Thomas and Jackie Enniss played at first doubles against Maggie Goldrick and Jean Thomae. The girls started the match with a close set ending in a score of 6-7 in favor of Cohasset, but proceeded to dominate the next set in a 6-2 win. Cohasset took the lead in the final tie-breaking set, ending the match quickly with a 6-0 win. Enniss and Thomas communicated well and stayed aggressive throughout their three-set loss.

Second doubles players juniors Jane Morgan and Annie Gluskin played an exciting match against Danielle Soosikian and Lauren Allen. The Duxbury duo stuck with the match until the very end before losing 4-6/4-6 to Cohasset.   

Despite the loss, the girls stayed positive and said they had a lot of fun during their matches. “I feel great about the team this year,” said Averna. “We’re a really nice group of girls who play hard and support each other well.” 

The team was ready to play its next match on Thursday against Marshfield, but an unexpected cancellation by the Rams left Duxbury with an 0-1 record for the week.

Assistant coach Jutta Rossano, speaking about the upcoming season, believes that the team has plenty of potential and a lot of talent. “I just think it is a question of how the team puts that talent to use.”  Head coach Glenn Pina is also excited about having experienced players on the team, but is apprehensive about new people playing in new spots.     

The girls hope to move on from their opening loss and play strongly against Hingham, who will entertain the Lady Dragons on Wednesday afternoon at 4.{sidebar id=6}
