From The DHS Athletic Director
Wednesday, March 05, 2008 02:33 AM
As with most extracurricular activities, fund raising is the backbone that enables the athletic department to function. The funding that the school provides pays for the basics for our student-athletes: transportation, coaches, officials, and fundamental equipment.  Boosters clubs through their various fund raising activities are able to give the student-athletes of Duxbury extra needed items.

As with most extracurricular activities, fund raising is the backbone that enables the athletic department to function. The main Boosters Club that ‘umbrellas’ all sports, purchases many big line items that are outside of the fiscal scope of the athletic department. The Booster group is responsible for the purchase of every banner hanging in the high school gym. In the past few years they have bought soccer goals, a baseball hitting tunnel, cheerleader competition mats, field hockey goals, and the scorer’s table in the DHS gym, just to name a few of their generous donations

The weekend of March 8th and 9th marks the biggest fundraiser for the athletic department. The antique show sponsored by the Athletic Boosters Club held in the high school gym will raise money so that purchases such as these can continue in the upcoming years. With the fiscal crisis that is hitting many of our Commonwealth’s schools, the fundraising of the Boosters Club will be taking on a higher importance.  Please take time out of your busy weekend schedules to stop and poke around the show.  The generous donations to the athletic department go a long way to helping our town’s youth success, not only in the athletic arena, but also in the areas that these successes aid outside of athletics.

Other Upcoming Events: Monday, March 17 marks the official first day of practices and tryouts for our spring sports. Times and sites of all practices will be posted outside of the athletic department office and on the athletic department web site that can be found off of the Duxbury schools (www.duxbury.k12.ma.us) web site.{sidebar id=1}

Our full list of school sponsored spring sports (levels in parenthesis) is as follows: Boys & Girls Lacrosse (varsity, JV, & freshman), Baseball (varsity, JV, & freshman), Softball (varsity & JV), Boys & Girls Track (varsity), Boys & Girls Tennis (varsity), Girls Golf (varsity), and Coed Sailing (varsity & JV).

In order to participate in a spring sport the following information must be handed in to the athletic department before a student can practice or tryout:

1. Athletic user fee of $175

2. Signed permission slip/consent form (available online on the district web site: www.duxbury.k12.ma.us)

3. Updated physical on file in the DHS nurses’ office. Physical must be within 13 months of 3/17/08.

Do not hesitate to contact my office if you have any questions: tholdgate@duxbury.k12.ma.us.
