Effort doesn’t bring victory for Dragons
By Mike Halloran
Tuesday, January 12, 2010 03:55 PM

It was a much better performance for Coach John Blake’s boys’ hockey team on Saturday night at The Bog. Nevertheless, once again the Dragons came up short against Coyle-Cassidy and dropped a 5-3 decision. After jumping out to a 4-1-1 record in the first two weeks of the season, the Dragons have picked a bad time to hit the skids. Losses to Norwood, Pembroke, and the Warriors have Duxbury on a three-game losing streak, just as they get ready to start a brutal stretch of games with Medford, Marshfield, and Hingham over the next seven days.

Lady Dragons continue to ice opponents
By Mike Halloran
Tuesday, January 05, 2010 03:19 PM

It looks like Duxbury has a hockey powerhouse to cheer for this winter after the Lady Dragons took care of Division I Lincoln-Sudbury (4-1) and Falmouth (5-3) last week to raise its record to 5-1. Coach Friend Weiler’s squad has been in cruise control since the week before Christmas, and they’ll try to stay in that mode on Wednesday afternoon when they take on Whitman-Hanson on the road at 3 p.m.

Tough start for young girls’ basketball team
By Mike Halloran
Tuesday, January 05, 2010 03:18 PM

Coach Mark Dunn knew it would be a serious rebuilding job after he lost a team full of seniors following the 2009 season. So far it’s been more of a challenge than he bargained for. Sporting a roster without a senior, there will be growing pains for the Lady Dragons this year, as even the returning players saw limited action last season.

Hockey turns cocky and blows lead
By Mike Halloran
Tuesday, January 05, 2010 03:07 PM

Off to a 4-1-1 start, the DHS boys’ hockey team was apparently basking in its own early-season success when they tangled with Norwood on Saturday night according to Head Coach John Blake. “We played a terrible second period,” said the Duxbury coach. “We came out and just didn’t move our feet. I don’t know if we thought we are better than we are. This team has to play 45 minutes a game. We can’t take a period off, nor can we take a shift off.”

Hockey off to a fast start
By Mike Halloran

It‘s supposed to be a rebuilding year for Coach John Blake and the Duxbury High School boy’s hockey team. Nevertheless, the young Dragons have shown they hope to be competitive right away after opening with a surprising 2-2 tie with St. John’s of Shrewsbury, followed by blowout wins over Barnstable (8-3) and North Quincy (5-0).

Scituate sails away from Dragons
Tuesday, December 22, 2009 12:15 PM

When asked what teams the Dragons should fear as they embarked on their 2009-10 season, Duxbury Head Coach Gordon Cushing said, “There is Scituate and Hingham, and then there is the rest of us.”

So far the Duxbury coach is 50 percent right after watching the Scituate Sailors dismantle his team with an easy 72-47 victory before a packed house in Scituate on Friday night.

Dragons cruise in hoops opener
By Mike Halloran
Monday, December 21, 2009 02:09 PM

Rarely does a coach get to put every member of his squad in the opening game of the season. Coach Gordon Cushing had that luxury on Tuesday night in Duxbury, as his Dragons romped to a 64-35 win over Silver Lake in Patriot League action. Led by Brian Grossman’s 26 points, Duxbury saw 12 players get in the scoring column, as they built a 31-20 halftime lead before shutting down the Lakers in the second half.

Lady Dragons drop a tough one
By Mike Halloran
Monday, December 21, 2009 02:08 PM

The Duxbury girls’ hockey team traveled to Barnstable last Wednesday night, hoping to show the Division I Red Raiders that they have the talent to take on teams from the higher echelons. Despite their gutsy effort, the Lady Dragons took the long bus ride home, thinking about all their lost opportunities in a 2-1 defeat that evened their record at 1-1.

Lady Dragons dominate in opener
By Mike Halloran
Tuesday, December 15, 2009 12:18 PM

It may have been small consolation for girls’ assistant hockey coach and DHS football coach Dave Maimaron, but it was certainly a nice way for head coach Friend Weiler and his team to open their season on Saturday night at the Hobomock Arena, with a dominating 3-0 win over Marshfield.

Dragons’ season ends with a thud
By Mike Halloran
Tuesday, December 08, 2009 05:12 PM

Having won nine games in a row, including their 17-7 Thanksgiving Day win over the Marshfield Rams, the Dragons had good vibes that a return trip to Gillette Stadium for the Division 2A championship game was in the cards. With a defense that had stifled the Marshfield running game, and a Ram offense that showed no signs of a passing attack, everything seemed to be falling in place for Duxbury.

Dragons’ season ends with a thud

Having won nine games in a row, including their 17-7 Thanksgiving Day win over the Marshfield Rams, the Dragons had good vibes that a return trip to Gillette Stadium for the Division 2A championship game was in the cards.

With a defense that had stifled the Marshfield running game, and a Ram offense that showed no signs of a passing attack, everything seemed to be falling in place for Duxbury.

However, the game took a bad turn for the Dragons early on and kept them struggling the rest of the evening, as they dropped a 27-6 decision to the Rams, ending their season and any hopes of repeating as Super Bowl champions.

Dragons topple Rams
By Mike Halloran
Monday, November 30, 2009 12:00 AM

The Dragons walked away with a 17-7 win over Marshfield last Thursday in the traditional Thanksgiving Day confrontation, hoping that their victory sent a clear message to the Rams prior to Tuesday’s Division IIA playoff game. While neither coach felt any great desire to show what they had in their offensive arsenals, the Dragons did show that running on the Rams was difficult, but moving it through the air was the way to go.

A double dose of Marshfield
By Mike Halloran
Monday, November 23, 2009 04:29 PM

If you decide to go see Auntie Mae on Thanksgiving Day, don’t worry. You should be back in time to see the Dragons play Marshfield five days later in the MIAA Division 2A Super Bowl playoffs. In a bizarre twist that neither coach seems too happy about, the winner of the Atlantic Coast Conference was scheduled to play the Patriot League-Keenan Division champ in the playoffs’ first round. DHS Athletic Director Thom Holdgate tried to persuade the state’s high school governing body to reverse opponents in the first round, but they wouldn’t budge, citing similar situations in recent years where Turkey Day opponents played each other five days later with no repercussions.
