No matter how far away the girls’ hockey team travels, road games don’t seem to faze Coach Friend Weiler’s squad. Traveling to Babson College last week, the Lady Dragons faced one of their toughest games of the season, as they took on No. 5-ranked Wellesley HS in a MLK Day matinee. Duxbury trailed in the first period for one of the few times this season, as they fell behind 1-0, but tied it at 1-1 before the period ended. Despite grabbing a 2-1 lead in the second period, the Raiders came back and tied the game at 2-2 after two periods. The Lady Dragons found themselves behind the eight ball in the third period, as they trailed 3-2 with less than five minutes to go in the game. But Lily Connolly (4:30) and Briana Connolly (1:53) scored for a 4-3 win over the Raiders, lifting their record to 8-1. On Saturday the team took the boat ride to Martha’s Vineyard when they manhandled the Islanders, 7-0. Outshooting the hosts 54-6, the Lady Dragons surprising led by just a goal after the first period and exploded for five goals in the second stanza before finishing up with goal number seven in the final 15 minutes. Hannah Murphy led the way with a hat-trick, while freshman defenseman Ally Hammell, freshman forward Liz Collins, Briana Connolly, and junior forward Colleen Leddie rounded out the Duxbury scoring. Sophomore Tori Sanchez saw action in goal in the third period and made a huge save to preserve the shutout win for Duxbury. |

When the Duxbury wrestling team traveled to Milford High School on Saturday for a quad meet, they knew that they would have their hands full with No. 19-ranked Milford and perennial powerhouse North Attleboro. Add Coventry, RI to the mix, winners of an unprecedented 17 consecutive state championships, and it was going to be a long day for the Dragon grapplers.

The Duxbury High School girls’ hockey team used a solid defensive effort to beat defending Division 1 State champion, Hingham High School, 2-0 on Wednesday night at The Bog. The win raised Duxbury’s record to 5-1, as they got ready for Wednesday night’s game against Falmouth High School on the road. Despite goals by Lily and Briana Connolly, it was the team’s defense that earned the number one star, as goaltender Rachel Myette had a relatively easy night thanks to the efforts of defensemen Caroline Shaunessy, Martha Findley, Keri Gould, and Ally Hamell.

The Duxbury High School girls’ basketball team improved its record to 5-1 with an easy 55-34 win over North Quincy on Friday night in Duxbury. It was just the team’s third game in the past two and a half weeks, but they rarely showed any rust, as they raced out to a 9-0 advantage and ended the first quarter with a comfortable 19-4 lead. Coach Mark Dunn was able to substitute freely from start to finish, with everyone seeing some action in a game the Lady Dragons controlled from the outset.

After opening the season with four straight wins, the Duxbury boys’ basketball team suffered its third straight defeat in a 52-50 loss to Whitman Hanson on Tuesday night in Duxbury. The Panthers jumped on the Dragons early, as senior guard Miles Hoffman scored in a variety of ways to put the Panthers ahead 10-4 with 3:49 left in the first quarter. Despite the aggressive start, Whitman-Hanson Coach Bob Rogers called a timeout to set up some offensive strategy for his team. When play resumed, the visitors went on a 10-5 run and closed out the first eight minutes of play with a 20-9 lead.

They seemed to have their act together in the first two periods, but the wheels fell off their wagon in the final 15 minutes of their game with Bridgewater-Raynham on Saturday night at The Bog, resulting in Duxbury’s 2-1 loss to the Trojans. After playing their last four games to ties, it looked like the Dragons were on their way to a win while nursing a 1-0 lead late in the third period. But an undisciplined style of play took over, costing the Dragons a game that looked headed for the victory column.
