The defending Division 2A Super Bowl champion Duxbury High School Dragons have been picked by some pundits as the best football team in Massachusetts. If that designation seemed to put any pressure on Coach Dave Maimaron’s squad you would never have known it by the way they played on Friday night.

The DHS Athletic Hall of Fame is asking all former DHS athletes who graduated between 2000 and 2006 and feel their athletic accomplishments warrant consideration for induction into the high school athletic Hall of Fame to contact Athletic Director Thom Holdgate at

After surrendering the state title they had held for seven straight years in 2010, the Duxbury Dragon lacrosse team regained the top spot in Massachusetts by defeating defending state champion, St. John’s Prep of Danvers, for the crown on Tuesday night at Harvard Stadium.

It’s the game that most prognosticators said would determine the Massachusetts Division I state lacrosse champion. On Saturday afternoon at 3:30, the Dragons will move one step closer to earning their eighth state crown when they travel to Billerica for the Division I state semifinals against the No. 2 seeded Indians.

They may not be the No. 1 seed in this year’s tournament, but the No. 3-seeded Dragons played like they won’t be stopped any time soon in a 16-0 rout of No. 19-seed Natick High School on Friday afternoon in Duxbury.

Senior Brayden Minahan returned to action after suffering a broken left wrist two weeks ago to lead the No. fifth-seeded Dragons to a 5-0 opening round win over No. 12 seeded Walpole. The victory sent Duxbury on to Millis on Monday at the Glen Ellen Country Club where they faced No. 4 seeded Medfield (16-2).

The No. 11-seeded Lady Dragons pulled off a minor upset in the first round of the MIAA Division II South Sectional tennis tournament by defeating No. 6-seeded Apponequet, 5-0, to advance to Monday’s quarterfinal match with undefeated Foxboro, (19-0).

While they sit with a 14-3 record, it makes some wonder how good the 2011 DHS lacrosse team is. Obviously they haven’t had the continuous run of double-digit margins of victory that have punctuated many of their seasons in the past. But a close look at the schedule tells you they have managed to beat every team that has been considered a threat for the title.

Norwell, the defending Division II state champions, has been a constant thorn in the side of the Lady Dragon lacrosse team for the past few years. On Thursday afternoon in Duxbury, it looked like that thorn was about to be removed.

Freshman Kelly Dame rescued the DHS girls’ tennis team from suffering its first shutout of the season when she battled Hingham’s Danielle Vanzura to a 4-6/6-4 tie before winning a tiebreaker, 10-5, in the third set for the Lady Dragons’ only win in a 4-1 loss to Hingham.
