Eleanor Jenkins Hartstone, age 94, died on Thursday, Jan. 10 in Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Hartstone, known as Mimi to all her friends and family, was a long time resident of Marion prior to her move to Atlanta in 1994.
A graduate of Florida State University, Mrs. Hartstone was teaching in Jupiter, Fla. When she married her first husband, the late Col. John W. Britten in 1942. Following Col. Britten’s death in 1959 she returned to college, earning her Master’s degree at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. where the family had long maintained a home. Her thesis was a study of the Gullah language of the low country of her beloved native state of Georgia. Relocating to Manalapan, Fla., Mrs. Hartstone, had resumed teaching at Palm Beach Jr. College when she met and married Boston attorney H. Nelson Hartstone, late of Manalapan, Fla. and Marion. A member of the Colonial Dames of America and the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mrs. Hartstone published several books including a collection of Col. Britten’s World War II correspondence as a paratrooper in the Pacific Theatre. She also published a book cataloging Mr. Hartstone’s collection of Chinese porcelain, which was subsequently donated to the Peabody-Essex Museum. A member of the Beverly Yacht Club and The Kittansett Club in Marion, Mrs. Hartstone was a popular supporter of the junior sailing program and an avid and tenacious golfer. She played her last competitive round of golf at the age of 88, when she finally won her first Club championship as the best, and only, “85 and over” competitor. Mrs. Hartstone leaves her daughter and son-in-low Betsi and Joseph McLure of Atlanta, Ga., her son and daughter-in-law John and Deborah Britten of Duxbury, grandchildren John W. Britten III of Washington, D.C. and Kathryn R. Britten of Charleston, S.C., niece Ann Clement of Orlando, Fla., and grandnephew Matt Clement and his wife of New York City. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Marion. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Plymouth, MA, 02360. |
