Edith G. Tremblay, 97, of Jaffrey, N.H., formerly of Hancock, N.H., died on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, N.H. Born on Feb. 1, 1915 in Medford, Mrs. Tremblay was the daughter of the late Cyrus Seymour and Edith (Philbrick) Gates. She grew up in Andover, graduated from the Andover Public Schools, and moved to Hancock in 1937. She married Arthur A. Tremblay in 1949. They were long-time residents of Hancock and well known as the owners of the Hancock Cash Market which Mr. and Mrs. Tremblay operated together from 1949 to 1971. An advocate for the education of young children, Mrs. Tremblay volunteered for many years as a reading and phonics aide at Hancock Elementary School. She was also a highly accomplished hand knitter and seamstress who designed custom clothing for herself and her family. Mrs. Tremblay was predeceased by her husband and her son, Richard A. Tremblay. She leaves her two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Berkebile of Bealeton, Va., and Judith A. Barrett of Duxbury; 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. A graveside service was held on Friday May 25 in Hillside Cemetery, Hancock, N.H.
