John M. “Jack” Powers, 77, of Duxbury, died on Jan. 21 after a brief illness, with his family by his side. He was born Nov. 16, 1934 in Everett, to Stephen J. and Sarah M. Powers. He grew up in Everett and after graduating from high school, served in the Navy on the submarine, USS Sea Robin. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. He married Claudette Bourcier in 1962, and returned to the Boston area with her after graduation. Mr. Powers spent 13 years working for Stone & Webster as a mechanical engineer, and then joined Commonwealth Electric in 1976, where he eventually assumed the position of Vice President of Energy Supply. He retired in 1993. Mr. Powers loved cooking, golfing and reading, and he was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. He was also active in Holy Family Church and was a member of Knights of Columbus. Mr. Powers leaves his wife of 49 years, Claudette of Duxbury; his children, John and his wife Ann Powers of Mason, N.H., Johanne and her husband, Bill Hocking of Duxbury, Danielle and her husband Ted Mottor of Holliston, Stephen Powers of Braintree and Matthew Powers of New York, N.Y.; his sisters, Jean Powers of Jefferson, Maine and Carol Niemi of Lunenberg; 10 grandchildren; his extended family and many friends. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, Jan. 29 from 4-7 p.m. at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St. (Rt. 106) Kingston. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Church in Duxbury on Monday, Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury.
