Shirley M. (Torrey) Doyle, 78, a resident of Whitman for over 50 years, died Wednesday, Sept. 7 after a brief period of failing health.  She was the wife of James J. Doyle.

Born and raised in Duxbury, Mrs. Doyle was the daughter of the late Carlton P. and Ethel (Howe) Torrey and had attended Duxbury schools.  She loved traveling and listening to country music, spending time with her family and caring for her many grandchildren.

Mrs. Doyle leaves her husband James; her children, Kevin Doyle of Whitman, Karen Sullivan and her husband Stephen of Hanson, and Kent Doyle and his wife Kerin of Ludlow; her siblings, Carlton Torrey Jr., Pauline Gosselin, Lorraine Torrey and George Torrey.  She also leaves six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Friday, Sept. 9 in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel , Whitman.  Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Whitman.
