Malcolm R. Gavin Jr., 85, Navy Veteran

Malcolm R. Gavin Jr., of Lexington, died on Thurs., Jan. 24. He was 85 years old. Mr. Gavin was the son of the late Malcolm R. and Edith M. June Gavin and the husband of 55 years to the late Jean Young Gavin. Malcolm R. Gavin Jr., of Lexington, died on Thurs., Jan. 24. He was 85 years old. Mr. Gavin was the son of the late Malcolm R. and Edith M. June Gavin and the husband of 55 years to the late Jean Young Gavin. Mr. Gavin was born in Arlington, graduated from Arlington High School in 1940 and from Northeastern University in 1944. He completed his post-graduate work at Tufts, Princeton and Harvard Business School. He was employed at the Boston Edison Company for 34 years and retired in 1981 as section head. Mr. Gavin was also a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII serving on the USS Washington. In 1982 he retired as a lieutenant in U.S. Navy Reserves.
Mr. Gavin was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., a member of the Lexington Historical Society, and a 50-year member of The Simon W. Robinson Masonic Lodge in Lexington and The Scottish Rite Bodies of Boston. He was also an eagle scout and volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America for many years, earning the Silver Beaver Award in 1967 as well as an active member of the Aleppo Shriner’s of Wilmington and Captain of the Arab Patrol Unit.
Mr. Gavin leaves his children Melissa Gavin Whitney and her husband Gene of Dummerston, Vt. and Bonnie Gavin Jones and her husband Stephen of Duxbury. He also leaves his grandchildren Amanda J. Whitney of Portland, Maine, Scott G. and Allison H. Jones of Duxbury, and a dear friend Joan L. Nisbet of Somersworth, NH.
Memorial visiting hours will be held at the Saville & Grannan Funeral Home in Arlington Center on Sat., Feb. 2 from 12-3 p.m. with a Masonic service at 3 p.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital-Burns Institute, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
