Joan L. Barnes, 72, teacher

Joan L. Barnes, 72, of Duxbury,  died June 26 after a long illness.  She received a B.A. degree in 1960 from Massachusetts Teachers College of Boston and taught in the Norwood school system until her marriage. She had many interests and hobbies and was an active member of Holy Family Church in Duxbury, serving as a Eucharistic minister until her illness.  She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Kathleen (English) McDonnell of County Roscommon and Claremorris County Mayo, Ireland, respectively.

Mrs. Barnes leaves her husband of 49 years, Dr. David E. Barnes; her children, Kathleen Barnes and her husband Jonathan Carr of Liverpool, England, Dr. Kelly Barnes Morrissey and her husband John of Wayland, and David E. Barnes Jr. and his wife Gwynne of Berwyn, Penn.; her brothers, John McDonnell and his wife Jean of Dover, Thomas McDonnell of Bowdoin, Maine, George McDonnell and his wife Joan of Duxbury; her sisters, Kathleen Miller and her late husband Howard of Wellesley and Mary Slavin and her husband Joseph of Natick; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceeded in death by her daughter Deborah Elizabeth, July 6, 1967.

Relatives and friends will be received on Tuesday June 28 from 4-8 p.m. at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St., Rt. 106, Kingston.  A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 29 at Holy Family Church, Duxbury, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
