F. Sherburne Carter Sr. died Dec. 15, 2010.  He was born March 11, 1920, in Boston  and lived in Duxbury for the past 50 years. He attended Philips Exeter Academy and Brown University.

After serving in the Navy in World War II as a lieutenant commander and aircraft carrier pilot, he graduated from Boston University with a degree in accounting.  Mr. Carter worked for New England Telegraph and Telephone Company for 25 years where he was a division manager responsible for producing the Yellow Pages. In retirement, he owned the Indian Pond Cranberry Corporation and worked with his sons in Carter Cranberry.

He became interested in making Shaker furniture and produced beautiful pieces for members of the family at his workshop in Kingston. His last project was a memorial plaque for St. John’s Episcopal Church, completed two months before his death.

Mr. Carter was an avid sailor throughout his life, and he and his wife spent every summer cruising the coast and Buzzards Bay area on his sailboat, Gunhild, until 2005.  He served as secretary for the Duxbury Yacht Club where he was awarded the Visitors Cup for outstanding service.

While commodore of the Blue Water Sailing Club, he helped inaugurate the biennial race from Marion to Bermuda, in which he skippered the Gunhild three times. He was also a member of the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion and the Second Club in Boston.

Mr. Carter leaves his wife of 68 years, Shirley Hanson Carter; his daughter, Carol Shilepsky; his son, Lyon Carter II; his grandchildren Lisa Van Raalte, Beth Price, Lyon Carter III, Christian Carter, Alexandra Carter, and Max Carter; and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased in Nov. 2009 by his son, F. Sherburne Carter, Jr.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Duxbury.  In lieu of flowers,  contributions may be sent to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth.
