Elizabeth “Betty†Goodrich Clark of Duxbury died April 17 at the age of 91. She was born to Benjamin Franklin Goodrich and Iza Moore Goodrich in 1919 on their farm in Duxbury, where she spent most of her 91 years. Following her graduation from Northampton School for Girls and Mount Holyoke College, she worked at Harvard University as a microbiologist during World War II. She married Bill Clark in 1945 after his escape from a German prison camp, and they raised poultry and eggs on the family farm in Duxbury, now named Hobby Knoll Stables. Mrs. Clark was a skilled horsewoman, who enjoyed jumping and riding the beaches and trails of Duxbury. In this 1939 photo, she and her horse, Midnight, are leading the band over the Blue Fish River Bridge in the Duxbury Fourth of July Parade. During the 1960s and 70s she was the leader of the Flying Mane 4-H Horse Club of Duxbury, and organized many area trail rides and horse shows. Mrs. Clark traveled extensively throughout the continent in her Airstream motor home, which she continued driving until her mid-eighties. She was a member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, the South Shore Antique Auto Club, the National Audubon Society, and was actively involved with the Duxbury Senior Center. Mrs. Clark was the wife of the late William Pierce Clark for fifty-four years. She leaves her children, Ann Anderson, Nancy Clark, and the late Richard Clark; her grandson, Phillip Anderson; and her great-grandson, Dylan Anderson, all of Duxbury. A celebration of Mrs. Clark’s life will be held on Saturday, May 1 at 11 a.m. at the First Parish Church, 842 Tremont St., Duxbury. Memorial donations may be sent to the Friends of the Duxbury Council on Aging, 10 Mayflower St., Duxbury, MA 02332. |
