Jane Breakey Poor, formerly of Cummaquid and Duxbury, died on Nov. 16 at her home in Stamford, Conn. at age 89. Her death came after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born Jane Arnold Breakey on Nov. 23, 1919, she grew up in South Orange, N.J. and attended Kent Place School and Smith College. In 1941, she married Lt. William Kromer (USMA ’41). They had two daughters before Captain Kromer was killed in action in Moircy, Belgium in 1944. In 1946, while living in Northfield, Vermont, she met US Army veteran, Daniel Clinton Poor. They were married in 1946 and had four children. Mrs. Poor served in several community service roles, including the Cummaquid Garden Club. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames of America. Her passion was contemporary American and Sogetsu School of Ikebana Japanese flower arranging. She served as a Master Judge in contemporary American and Japanese flower arranging shows and lectured widely throughout the United States and the Caribbean. In addition, she was an expert on native wildflowers and natural landscape design. Mrs. Poor leaves five children, Marcia Langeland, of Duxbury, Barbara Toft, of Tupelo, Miss., Jane Valenstein, of Old Greenwich, Conn., Peter Poor of Belfast, Northern Ireland; and Daniel Poor of Woodbury, Conn.; along with 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org. |
