Michael Aleck Yanginski, 91, of Duxbury, formerly of Hatfield, Mass., died Nov. 11 at the LifeCare Center of Plymouth after battling pancreatic cancer. He was born in Hatfield on Sept. 1, 1918, the son of the late Jacob and Mary (Niemczyk) Yanginski. He was a longtime Hatfield resident. Mr. Yanginski worked for the Dickinson Family and Day Farm in Hatfield and spent the last 15 years of his career employed by Smith College in the office of past President Jill Conway, before his retirement in 1983. He served in the United States Navy and was stationed in Key West, Fla., where he trained for the Pacific Theater. Mr. Yanginski was a life member and past commander of the Hatfield American Legion Post 344. He served the town for many years as a member of the Hatfield Board of Selectmen and the Water Commission of Hatfield. He was an avid gardener, and he harvested his last garden in September just weeks before his death. Mr. Yanginski was the husband of the late Sophie Constance Chmura Yanginski. He leaves his three children, Peter Yanginski and his wife Sibylle of Deerfield, N.Y., Elizabeth von Pier and her late husband Hubert of Scituate, Margaret Frieswyk and her husband William of Cape Cod; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, with his ninth great-grandchild expected to arrive on Nov. 22. Religious services were held at the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton. Burial with full military honors followed in Calvary Cemetery in Hatfield.
