John was born in Oneonta, NY and spent his childhood in Albany, N.Y. He was a graduate of Albany Academy and Colgate University, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. During World War II he was a Lieutenant in the United States Army, serving as Unit Commander of the 801st Tank Destroyer Battalion. He received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Germany. An avid golfer, reader, and Boston sports fan, Mr. Dorsey was a charter member of the Hearts Club of Wellesley, loved playing cards, and spending time on the beaches of Cape Cod and Duxbury with his family. Mr. Dorsey leaves his daughters, Susan Dorsey Gray, and her husband Dan, of West Stockbridge, and Martha Dorsey Harrison, and her husband Huntley, of Chatham; four grandchildren, Courtney Gray Haupt, and her husband Jonathan, Whitney Gray, and John and Jenny Harrison. He was the brother of the late Jean Dorsey McDonald of Geneseo, N.Y. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 22 at 3 p.m. at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Chatham. A private burial will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Appreciation Fund, c/o Maureen Gardner, Epoch Assisted Living, 855 Harwich Rd., Brewster, MA 02631. |
