She was born in Belleville, N.J. on Dec. 20, 1921 to William J. and Johanna A. Frey Horgan. She graduated high school in 1939, and then received a certificate in secretarial science from the Berkley Secretarial School. She worked for American Airlines for over five years, first as a secretary, then in 1943 as a stewardess.
Mrs. Sawyer loved aviation so much she married the late Eastern Airlines pilot Haven 'Tom' Sawyer Jr. on Nov. 22, 1947 and moved to the Boston area. In 1950, Duxbury became their home where they raised three sons. Her favorite pastimes were reading, swimming, antiquing and travel. Retirement sent the couple packing to New Harbor, Maine in 1980. They wintered in the Orlando area after 1985. Mrs. Sawyer leaves her sons Robert, William and Michael, a grandson, and great grandson. Funeral services were held on Sat., Jan 5 in the chapel at Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta, Maine. She will be buried, with her husband, at the Harrington Cemetery, Pemaquid, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local Salvation Army or at www.salvationarmyusa.org. |
