Carl Edward Bitters of Duxbury, died April 19 after a brief illness. He was 92 years old. Born on the family farm in Duxbury, he graduated from Duxbury High School in 1935, and was the last living member of his graduating class of thirteen students. He served his country in WWII in the Army Airborne Division, 809 Aviators Ground Engineers, from 1940-1945. He was a member of the American Legion Duxbury Post 322 and a life-long member of the Duxbury Call Firefighters. He worked for the Duxbury school system for 35 years. He also owned the first landscape business in Duxbury for over seventy years. Mr. Bitters was a founding member of the First Baptist Church of Duxbury. A life-long hunter, fisherman, farmer and gardener, he loved growing vegetables, shrubs and flowers of all kinds, including his prized dahlias. Mr. Bitters leaves his wife of fifty-five years, Bernice Bitters, of Duxbury; his son, David Bitters and his wife Laura of Duxbury; his late daughter Cynthia Marsha Bitters of Duxbury; his sisters Olga-Victoria Bitters of Duxbury, Adeline McKnight Bitters of La Jolla, CA, the late Marguerite Edson Shaw Bitters of New Jersey; three grandchildren and one niece. There will be a graveside service for friends and family on Thursday, April 23 at 10 a.m. at the Mayflower Cemetery, Tremont Street. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Duxbury on Saturday, May 2 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Bitters Memorial Fund c/o Rockland Trust Bank, P.O. Box 1627, Duxbury, MA 02331. |
