Walter R. Flanagan, 88, of Duxbury, died on Dec. 10. Born in 1919 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the second youngest of six children born to the late Walter Aloysius Flanagan and Mary (Smith) Flanagan. Mr. Flanagan was a veteran of WWII. He was a member of the 29th Division stationed in Europe, near the end of the war he met and married the late Marguerite Frances Rochon. For more than 30 years he worked for Sperry Gyroscope Co., a defense plant on Long Island. His entire adult life was marked by his giving generously of his time to individuals and institutions: he led support groups for the Richmond Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Assoc., was an AARP tax preparation volunteer, a literacy volunteer, a Little League manager, and a hockey coach. He was a past President of the Parent’s Assoc. of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He served for many years as the correspondent for the WWII veterans of the 29th Division. He volunteered in several capacities at the Senior Citizens Center in Duxbury and also volunteered at the Duxbury Thrift Shop. Mr. Flanagan leaves two sons; Christopher M. Flanagan of Duxbury and Kevin T. Flanagan of Seattle, Wa. He also leaves his grandchildren; Courtney Brooke Elio and Dalton C. Flanagan both of Arizona and three great grandchildren; Max Elio, Theo Elio and Luca Elio, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Edmund Flanagan and the late Frances, Grace, Mildred and Irene. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 11 a.m., at the First Parish Church, on Tremont Street.
