Charles W. Lovejoy Jr., 81, of Duxbury, died on Sunday, July 13 with his family at his side.
Charles W. Lovejoy Jr., 81, of Duxbury, died on Sunday, July 13 with his family at his side. He was born in 1927 in Rumford, Maine, and was the son of the late Charles W. and Constance D. Lovejoy. He graduated from Winchester High School in 1945 and then joined the Navy from 1945 – 1946. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1950. While attending Bowdoin, Mr. Lovejoy was captain of the Bowdoin Polar Bears football team, a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and sang with their glee club, The Meddiebempsters. Upon graduation he was commissioned and recalled to active duty and attended the Naval Intelligence School in Washington D.C. He was subsequently posted as Assistant U.S. Naval Attaché to the U.S. Embassy in Japan with the rank of Lieutenant, Senior Grade. Following his Naval service, Mr. Lovejoy went to work as a stockbroker starting his career on Wall Street and later in Boston. In 1976 he started his own antique restoration business working with many local clients along with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1968 he married Ms. Janet Spinney and they moved to Duxbury. He was an active participant in the community and was a member of the Duxbury Historical Society and the Duxbury Nuclear Advisory Committee. Mr. Lovejoy was an avid reader of military history, military fiction, historical fiction and history. His other interests included miniature shipbuilding, bird watching, and the Red Sox. He was a Vestryman of the Church of Epithany in N.Y.C. and later served as a trustee and Deacon of the Pilgrim Church in Duxbury. Mr. Lovejoy leaves his wife Janet, daughter Susan B. LeBlanc of Doylestown, Pa., son James M. Lovejoy of Bedford, N.H. and daughter Constance D. Lovejoy of Duxbury. He also leaves his sister Virginia Allyn of Marion, and grandchildren Emily LeBlanc, Adrienne LeBlanc and Heather Lovejoy. Funeral services and celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 1 p.m. at Pilgrim Church of Duxbury on Washington Street. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 1700, Chicago, IL 60601. |
