Lucie A. Strayer, 95, of Hilton Head Island, S.C. died Tuesday, June 24.
Lucie A. Strayer, 95, of Hilton Head Island, S.C. died Tuesday, June 24. She was born November 17, 1912 in Rotterdam, Netherlands and educated in The Netherlands and Switzerland as a Naturalist. A member of the Dutch Resistance, she was smuggled to Sweden after the Nazis put a price on her head. After WWII, she went to the Dutch East Indies as a Naturalist and later served in that capacity on ships of the Holland-American Line where she met and married Donald Bischoff from Duxbury in 1954. After he died she married Luther M. Strayer, Jr., MD in 1969. She traveled widely and was known for her work with Audubon and Nature Conservation. She helped to survey and design the nature trails at the Cape Cod Seashore National Park. Mrs. Strayer leaves two brothers, Hans Pluygers of England and Willem Pluygers of Holland as well as her step-son Luther M. Strayer III, MD and Mary Ann B. Strayer of Hilton Head Island and two step-daughters, Elizabeth M. Wolff of Tucson, Ariz. and Susanne M. Kaplan of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She also leaves one nephew, David Bischoff of Vt. and two nieces, Nancy B. Meyers of Higganum, Conn. and Louise P. Burkhardt of Wallingford, Conn. Burial will be in Massachusetts at a later date.
